Wellington New Zealand Climate Action Festival
The Wellington Climate Action Festival was an incredible success!!! Organised by volunteers from gecko (University Environmental Group) the festival received approx 2500 people. Highlights included local bands playing interspersed by speakers, discussion panels involving climate scientists, food served on biodegradable packaging, over 20 information stalls under a huge marquee, children's activities such as face painting, scavenger hunts, costumes and much much more. Our minister for climate change spoke and our Wellington mayor was involved in discussions, local councillors were also involved on the stage. Communities were involved and many people left messages on discussion boards, encouraging further action. The area had couches for people to relax and discuss their local issues as facilitated by volunteers, it created a platform for people to share their ideas and concerns. These activities will provide a starting point for this energy to continue and provide a ripple effect beyond the 8th December.
